Certification What is the Eurovent certification process for HVACR products?

The Eurovent certification process is a structured third-party evaluation designed to verify product performance objectively. First the participant puts in a certification request. Next their certification application and reported data is analysed and validated.

Then we get onto the testing and evaluation of the product(s) to be certified, which may vary slightly between programmes. This can include the physical testing of products in a laboratory, production site auditing, a check of product selection tools, desk study etc. Once the evaluation is complete, the results are reviewed and a decision on certification made.

Once certification is granted, products are subject to ongoing surveillance to ensure continued compliance with certification rules and declared performance. Successful participants will then move onto a surveillance process, which may include annual factory and software audits, to ensure products continue to meet the certification requirements. This also ensures a more streamlined certification renewal approach.

Certification What evaluation protocols are used?

We use state of the art evaluation protocols including independent tests, manufacturing audits, control of selection software, product sampling, product purchase, data consistency algorithms crossed by product family and product disassembly after testing. Find out more on the certification process page.

Certification How are Eurovent certification tests carried out?

Eurovent certification tests are carried out by independent laboratories according to harmonised and standardised test protocols. All tests are carried out according to a single protocol as defined in the Technical Certification Rules of the programme.

The same protocol is used by laboratories, for all tests, and applies to all manufacturers without exception, ensuring fair comparison, reproducibility and equal treatment for all manufacturers.

Certification Why are standard testing conditions used?

Standardised testing conditions are essential to objectively compare HVAC product performance. Standard test conditions allow benchmarking of certified performance data on a level playing field.

Installation and operating conditions vary so much from one project to another, there is no way to test for every eventiality. However, many Eurovent Certified Performance programmes also include metrics that allow for testing that more accurately mimics 'real-world' performance. The Technical Certification Rules of each programme specify testing requirements.

Certified data is therefore extremely useful for product comparison, while installation conditions still remain essential for project-specific design decisions.

Certification What happens if a product fails Eurovent certification tests?

If a product fails a test, the participant has three choices:

  1. They accept the first test result and rerate their products according to the test result.
  2. They can ask for a second test of the same unit.
  3. Or they can ask for a second test of a new unit.

Participants can only re-test once. In serious cases, test failures can result in certificate suspension.

In cases where the rerate result is accepted, the participant has a defined deadline to update their data according to the test results. Eurovent Certita Certification will regularly check that the rerates have been applied correctly and will issue penalty tests to ensure data integrity.

Certification Does failing certification tests prevent a product from being certified?

Failing a test does not automatically prevent certification, but corrective measures are required.

New participants must pass all the tests to be certified.

Failure during test generates additional tests and/or re-rating of performances according to test results. Performance data are therefore correct.

Campaign failure rate is monitored for each participant. Underperformance can lead to additional product sampling, and up to a certificate suspension for a year.

Certification Why is a manufacturing audit not included in all programmes?

Mass production products coming from ISO 9001 manufacturing plants may not need to be audited again.

‘Certify All’ requirements, as well as pre-declaration of performance, provide proper rules to process a high quality product selection for test.

A random test point procedure and a multiple test point protocol already deliver very stringent certification rules to respect, hence adding a plant audit will only deliver a marginal improvement to those certification programmes.

Certification What is the energy efficiency label?

Based on certified data, the energy label developed by Eurovent Certita Certification is a clear and reliable solution to quickly identify the energy efficiency of a product. Energy classes are from A+ for the most efficient products to E for the least efficient. It makes it easy to compare products at a glance, with the same classification rules for all types of products.

Sustainability

This FAQ section provides an overview of key concepts and services related to sustainability in the HVACR sector, with a particular focus on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). It is designed to help manufacturers better understand the role of environmental data, the structure of related studies, and how these approaches can support both compliance with evolving market expectations and more informed product and business decision-making.

🌱 Sustainability
Sustainability

What sustainability services do you provide for HVACR manufacturers?

We are now providing dedicated support to HVACR manufacturers in the development of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Our services are designed to help companies respond to growing market expectations for robust environmental data, while building a stronger foundation for future sustainability requirements. This is a first step in our work towards promoting more reliable, accessible and at scale sustainability assessments.
Sustainability

What is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised document that communicates the environmental performance of a product based on a Life Cycle Assessment. EPDs are developed in accordance with applicable standards and Product Category Rules and are typically independently verified before publication. They provide transparent, credible, and comparable environmental information to customers, specifiers, and other stakeholders.
Sustainability What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

A Life Cycle Assessment is a methodology used to evaluate the environmental impacts of a product across its life cycle. This may include raw material supply, manufacturing, transport, installation, use, and end-of-life stages, depending on the scope of the study. LCA provides the analytical basis for understanding environmental hotspots and identifying improvement opportunities.

Sustainability

What is the difference between an LCA and an EPD?

An LCA is the underlying environmental study used to quantify impacts across the life cycle of a product. An EPD is the formal communication document derived from that study and prepared in line with defined programme and PCR requirements. In practical terms, the LCA provides the data and analysis, while the EPD presents the results in a recognised and publishable format.

Sustainability

What does your EPD support service include?

Our EPD support service is designed as a structured and efficient process that can include scope definition, data collection guidance, life cycle modelling, preparation of EPD content, support in selecting the relevant programme framework, coordination with verifiers, and assistance through registration and publication. Our objective is to provide manufacturers with a clear and manageable route from data collection to published declaration.

Sustainability

How can an LCA support business and product decision-making?

LCA can support more informed decision-making by identifying the life cycle stages, materials, or processes that contribute most significantly to environmental impacts. This enables manufacturers to assess improvement options, compare scenarios, support Ecodesign initiatives, and strengthen the environmental basis of product and portfolio decisions. It transforms sustainability from a reporting requirement into a practical management tool.

Sustainability

Can your studies support both current and future sustainability requirements?

Yes. Our approach is intended not only to address immediate needs such as EPD development, but also to help manufacturers build studies and data structures that can support broader sustainability objectives over time. This includes improved comparability, internal reuse of results, and better readiness for evolving market, policy, and digital reporting expectations.

Sustainability

Why should HVACR manufacturers start working on LCA or EPD now?

Environmental transparency is becoming increasingly important across the construction and building services value chain. Customers, specifiers, project stakeholders, and regulatory developments are all driving greater demand for credible product-level environmental information. Starting now enables manufacturers to build internal knowledge, improve data quality, and position themselves more effectively in a changing market environment.

Sustainability

What information is typically required to start an LCA or EPD project?

The required information generally includes product composition, bill of materials, manufacturing data, energy and resource use, packaging, transport assumptions, and end-of-life information. The exact requirements depend on the product, the intended scope, and the applicable programme rules. We support companies throughout the data collection process to ensure the information is both relevant and fit for purpose.

Sustainability
