The Eurovent Certified Performance programme for Fans evaluates fans intended for use in Air Handling Units (AHUs) and has been developed in collaboration with the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International Inc, along with its European regional office, AMCA EU. The Fans programme combines AMCA certification protocols with Eurovent Certification’s stringent audit process to create a comprehensive, globally recognised scheme, that attests the performance of AHU fans.

Why is fan certification important?

Fans are a central component in AHUs, therefore it’s vital that specifiers have accurate product information when making decisions. If product data is incorrect, products can underperform. Consequences include:

  • Reduced airflow and ventilation efficiency, resulting in poor indoor air quality (IAQ), discomfort, and potential non-compliance with ventilation standards.
  • Higher energy consumption, resulting in larger energy bills and increased carbon footprint.
  • Uneven pressure or air distribution across the building.
  • Increased noise levels due to incorrect sizing, or high rotational speeds required to meet performance targets.
  • An underperforming fan may force other AHU components to operate under sub-optimal conditions, accelerating wear, increasing maintenance needs, or even leading to system failure.
  • Plus, underperforming fans may render the entire AHU non-compliant with legislation such as the EU's Ecodesign requirements for Energy-related Products (ErP), which requires minimum efficiency thresholds and accurate product labelling. This can lead to legal risks.

In short, an ineffective fan can undermine the entire AHU’s performance, making it less efficient, noisier, harder to maintain, and more costly to operate, all while increasing environmental and regulatory risks.

This is why it is essential that manufacturer data is correct. Third-party evaluation via Eurovent Certification removes the risk of incorrect product data. Certification gives specifiers the tools to accurately compare and select products with confidence, as it ensures products will perform as advertised.

What products are included?

This certification programme applies to all fan types that are intended to be used as AHU components and covered by the scope of “AMCA 211 – Certified Ratings Program Product Rating Manual for Fan Air Performance”.

What is certified?

Eurovent Certification has a collaborative arrangement with the USA based Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International Inc. The Fans certification programme utilises AMCA evaluation protocols, alongside Eurovent Certification audits. Therefore, products must first be certified by the AMCA to apply for the Eurovent Certified Performance mark.

Main certified characteristics

The selection tool or catalogue of the certified fans provides the characteristics of the fans, such as:

  • Air performance
  • Sound performance
  • Energy efficiency performance:
    • FEI (Fan Energy Index)
    • FEG (Fan Efficiency Grade)

These characteristics can be certified, but not all of them need to be certified at the same time.

What are the testing standards?

The fans certified under this Eurovent Certified Performance programme are tested to AMCA and ISO standards.

You can find out more about the standards used, along with the full certification rules and requirements in the Technical Certification Rules and Certification Manual. Check out the Eurovent Certified Performance programme for Fans page.

Why choose Eurovent Certified Performance?

Eurovent Certified Performance for Fans offers a comprehensive, independent and impartial certification programme, which goes far beyond laboratory testing alone.

This programme includes:

  • Laboratory tests to AMCA and ISO standards to evaluate product performance
  • Factory audits to ensure production line quality
  • Selection software checks to ensure software uses accurate and reliable data
  • Evaluation of all submitted documents (including marketing materials) for technical credibility and continuity
  • And crucially, products are put under a surveillance process to ensure they continue to comply with declared data.

Evaluation protocols are uniform to ensure the certification process is fair and equal for all manufacturers. Eurovent Certification:

  • Evaluates all fans according to the same criteria
  • Expresses results in the same unit of measurement, regardless of the country where the products are manufactured or marketed
  • Ensures all products within the programme go through exactly the same certification and surveillance process
  • Ensures products with components manufactured across multiple sites (sometimes in different countries), all reach Eurovent certification standards
  • Impartiality standards are kept high as manufacturers and laboratories have no direct contact, keeping the process clear of any bias.

As all fans go through the same process, decision makers can directly compare this data when making product decisions, via the free to access certified product directory.
