Desert Certification

In the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, HVAC systems face extreme high ambient temperatures, yet most equipment is still certified using European or American Standards. Eurovent Certification has therefore created the Desert Certification – a performance-based certification scheme tailored specifically to the harsh climate of the GCC.

Eurovent Certification has worked closely with local GCC governments to secure official acceptance of Desert Certification, enabling manufacturers to:

  • Avoid the burden of multiple local and international certifications
  • Benefit from a unique, unified certification scheme
  • Gain recognition both locally and internationally
  • Showcase true product performance in its actual environment.

Desert Certification empowers manufacturers to prove that their products are designed and tested for the most demanding environments.

Scope of the programme

Desert certification applies to products within the following Eurovent Certified Performance programmes:

  • Air Conditioners
  • VRF Systems
  • Chillers
  • Rooftop Units
  • IT Cooling Units.

Testing is undertaken by six accredited laboratories across Europe and a laboratory in the UAE.

Certified characteristics

Mandatory Testing Points:

  • Based on the 0B weather bin from ISO 16358-1: Amd 2019, chosen because 90% of GCC cities fall within this classification according to the ASHRAE weather map
  • Includes key temperature points:
  • Cooling capacity and EER at T1 (35 °C)
  • Cooling capacity and EER at T3 at (46 °C)
  • Operability test for two hours at 52 °C.

Optional Testing Points:

  • Cooling capacity and EER at T4 (48 °C) for units destined for Kuwait market
  • T1 (35°C) at half load (Enabling CSPF certification according to ISO).

Innovative Seasonal Efficiency: The DSEER

After years of working with manufacturers, we developed the Desert Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (DSEER), a unique seasonal performance metric designed for the GCC climate.

DSEER calculates seasonal efficiency based on four part-load conditions:

  • Part Load A : T3 at 100% load
  • Part Load B: 40 °C at 77% load
  • Part Load C: 33 °C at 50% load
  • Part Load D: 26 °C at 23% load.

Testing requirements:

To certify the DSEER, only two tests are needed - one at full load and one at part load, following the EN 14825 methodology - making the certification process both efficient and effective.
