Our partnerships: The Building Engineering Services Association

May 27, 2026

Professional institutes and trade associations play a key role in education and knowledge sharing, promoting high standards, supporting professionals and raising a voice for the HVACR sector. This is why Eurovent Certification has joined a number of membership associations throughout Europe, to help support their vital work at a time when technological advances, regulatory reform and decarbonisation loom large. In the UK, Eurovent Certification is a member of the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA), an important trade association in the HVACR sector.

About BESA

For more than 120 years, BESA has championed excellence across the building engineering services sector. Formerly known as the Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association (HVCA), it exists to ensure that better buildings are delivered and maintained, because better buildings ultimately support better lives. At its core, BESA provides the standards and guidance that define what “good” looks like, helping engineers, contractors and building operators make informed, high-quality decisions.

BESA is a member-owned organisation, run by the industry for the industry, with no external shareholders. Its membership spans businesses of all sizes across the UK, working in the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and management of building systems. By bringing these organisations together, BESA creates a strong, collaborative community focused on raising standards, sharing knowledge and supporting sustainable business growth.

The association’s work centres on four key pillars: representing the industry, setting standards of excellence, developing skills, and providing evidence of competence. BESA works closely with members, government and wider stakeholders to shape policy, define best practice and establish technical standards. It is also heavily involved in training and apprenticeships and offers continuous professional development opportunities, alongside accreditation and certification schemes that allow individuals and businesses to demonstrate compliance and capability.

Beyond its core trade body role, BESA provides a wide range of practical services that support the industry’s day-to-day needs, including education via the BESA Academy, and specialist registers, certification schemes and maintenance tools including the Vent Hygiene Register, Competent Person Scheme, SKILLcard, REFCOM, the UK test standard for Heat Interface Units, SFG20 and Welplan. It also actively campaigns on critical issues such as building safety, skills, net zero and business improvement, acting as a trusted voice for its members and helping to drive a safer, more sustainable and more effective built environment.

Events

For the past two years, Eurovent Certification has exhibited at the BESA Annual Conference and sponsored a category at BESA’s Industry Awards.

At the most recent Conference and Awards in 2025, Eurovent Certification’s newly appointed UK Partnership Manager, Matthew Nudd, had the chance to meet BESA and its members in person. Reflecting on the event, he said, “One of my main takeaways from the 2025 BESA conference was the ongoing challenge of ‘race to the bottom’ procurement. In a panel discussion, Remy, Managing Director of Gratte Brothers, spoke candidly about the growing issue of risk being transferred into the design phase, and how this increasingly puts quality at odds with the way projects are procured.”

Matthew also highlighted another message that resonated strongly throughout the day from David Frise, CEO of BESA, “David emphasised how building standards should represent the minimum we expect, not the benchmark we aspire to meet. As an industry, we should be aiming significantly higher than our current standards. This is a message Eurovent Certification backs wholeheartedly.”

In November 2025, Ali Alexandre Nour Eddine, International Director at Eurovent Middle East, took part as a speaker at the 2025 World Ventil8 Day Exchange, hosted by BESA at The Building Centre, London. The event brought together engineers, contractors, consultants, manufacturers, service providers and others seeking healthier buildings, to exchange fresh ideas, real talk, and practical solutions around ventilation and indoor air quality.

Support has been a two-way-street, as BESA along with CIBSE supported the IAQ Matters Conference by Eurovent back in January 2025.

A valued relationship

Championing the work of organisations such as BESA is an important link in strengthening the HVACR industry. Membership fosters education, knowledge sharing and collaboration. We look forward to supporting the aims of the BESA through membership and look forward to the opportunities to collaborate ahead.
