ETL listing made easier for Eurovent‑certified chillers

Mar 24, 2026

Manufacturers of packaged chillers can now benefit from a streamlined application process for the UK Energy Technology List (ETL) through our latest alignment with ETL criteria. By using their existing Eurovent Certified Performance test reports, manufacturers can now demonstrate compliance with ETL performance standards.

For specifiers and procurement teams, this alignment makes high-performing equipment easier to identify through independently verified, comparable data, supporting more efficient selection of packaged chillers for commercial and industrial projects.

This latest collaboration builds on previous ETL and Eurovent alignments across Heat Pump technologies, Evaporative Air Coolers and Refrigerated Display Cabinets, further expanding the range of products that can use existing Eurovent Certification test reports to support ETL applications.

Matthew Nudd, UK Partnership Manager at Eurovent Certification said, “Our collaboration with the Energy Technology List stems from a common goal, of derisking design and purchasing decisions, by providing confidence through independently verified performance data. The Energy Technology List is an excellent platform, allowing users to make quicker, more informed, sustainable decisions. This important alignment enables Eurovent-Certified manufacturers a streamlined process to identify themselves within the top 25% of the market for energy efficiency in their class, and benefit from the Energy Technology List’s thousands of decision makers, who are already regularly utilising the resource, across multiple product categories.”

What are packaged chillers?

Packaged chillers are factory assembled units that extract heat from a liquid to provide cooling for air or industrial processes. These systems are widely used in office buildings, hospitals, retail environments and manufacturing sites. The ETL distinguishes between comfort chillers, used primarily for space conditioning, and high temperature process chillers, which provide essential cooling for industrial equipment.

Eligible product categories

The alignment applies to six out of the seven product categories within the ETL Packaged Chillers sub-category. Manufacturers holding Eurovent Certified Performance for Chillers and Heat Pumps (LCP-HP) can use their test reports for the following ETL applications:

  • Product type 1 – Air-cooled comfort chillers providing cooling only, with a cooling capacity less than or equal to 1,500 kW. This category includes systems utilising free cooling, provided these configurations are declared and tested according to the relevant standards. However, manufacturers should note that Eurovent Certification does not currently extend to comfort chillers with free-cooling.
  • Product type 2 – Air-cooled, reverse cycle, comfort chillers providing both heating and cooling, with a cooling capacity less than or equal to 1,500 kW.
  • Product type 3 – Water-cooled comfort chillers providing cooling only, with a cooling capacity less than or equal to 2,000 kW.
  • Product type 4 – Water-cooled, reverse cycle, comfort chillers providing both heating and cooling, with a cooling capacity less than or equal to 2,000 kW.
  • Product type 6 – Air-cooled high temperature process chillers with a refrigeration capacity less than or equal to 1,500 kW.
  • Product type 7 – Water-cooled high temperature process chillers with a refrigeration capacity less than or equal to 2,000 kW.

Product type 5 (Air-cooled simultaneous heating and cooling comfort chillers that are able to provide both heating and cooling simultaneously and have a cooling capacity that is less than or equal to 1,500kW) is not currently aligned with Eurovent Certified Performance criteria.

This alignment applies to the specific comfort and high-temperature process chiller categories defined above. Other technology types, such as medium temperature (MT), low temperature (LT) and very high temperature (VHT) chillers, are not currently included in the ETL criteria and therefore sit outside the scope of this update.

Important refrigerant specification

The ETL maintains a focus on high environmental performance by listing packaged chillers designed for and tested with refrigerants that have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 750 or less. This commitment to sustainability ensures that Eurovent certified products meeting this specific GWP threshold are eligible for ETL listing, providing a clear pathway for manufacturers who prioritise the most energy efficient solutions.

How to apply

If your products fall within these aligned categories and hold Eurovent Certified Performance for Chillers and Heat Pumps, you can begin your application using your existing test reports. Explore the ETL criteria for Packaged Chillers to check product eligibility.

To understand the submission process in detail, watch a short video and download the Packaged Chillers application checklist, which outlines the information and documentation required. You can also visit the ETL manufacturers’ page for the further guidance and supporting resources.

All ETL listed products benefit from additional promotion through a newsletter and social media channels. If you would like more information about the application process or eligibility requirements, please contact the ETL team.
