Fabian Diaz, LCA Lead at Eurovent Certification, provides an update on ISO 14025:2026 and what it means for Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs).

The publication of ISO 14025:2026 marks the first major revision of the international EPD standard in nearly 20 years. The update strengthens requirements for programme governance, verification, transparency, harmonisation, and digitalisation, reflecting the growing role of EPDs in procurement, regulations, and sustainability reporting.

For manufacturers, the message is clear: environmental data is becoming more important, more scrutinised, and increasingly digital.

Among the key changes introduced by the new standard are:

  • Stronger independence and impartiality requirements for Programme Operators and verifiers.
  • New requirements for the governance and verification of EPD tools.
  • Improved harmonisation between EPD programmes through additional guidance.
  • Expanded requirements for EPD content, comparability, and communication.
  • Recognition of additional sustainability-related information alongside traditional environmental indicators.
  • Recognition of EPD tools to scale up EPD development.

These developments are particularly relevant for HVAC&R manufacturers, where large product portfolios, frequent updates, and complex product families create challenges for traditional EPD approaches.

Eurovent Certification’s EPD Programme is being developed with these challenges in mind. Because the programme is still under construction, it is being designed directly alongside the requirements of ISO 14025:2026, rather than requiring major adaptations later. This allows Eurovent Certification to integrate the latest expectations on governance, verification, PCR management, transparency, and digitalisation from the outset.

A key focus for Eurovent Certification is creating a framework that supports both credibility and scalability. The new ISO standard formally recognises EPD tools and introduces requirements for their verification, opening the door to more efficient and digital EPD generation while maintaining independent oversight. This is closely aligned with Eurovent Certification's vision of developing a modern, scalable framework for HVAC&R manufacturers.

As the industry transitions to ISO 14025:2026, manufacturers will increasingly look for EPD programmes that combine strong governance, technical rigour, and practical implementation. Eurovent Certification's objective is to provide exactly that: an HVAC&R-focused EPD Programme built on the latest international requirements from day one.
