As part of our ongoing series of articles cataloguing our support of organisations working throughout the global HVACR industry, this month we are focusing on the refrigeration sector. Eurovent Certification recently became a member of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) - also known as L'Institut international du froid (IIF) - an independent intergovernmental organisation aiming to gather scientific and technical knowledge in every sector of refrigeration.
The International Institute of Refrigeration is dedicated to enhancing knowledge and fostering collaboration on all aspects of refrigeration, such as food and health cold chains, air conditioning, cryogenics, heat recovery and heat pumps technologies and their applications, to contribute to a sustainable future for all.
Founded in 1908, the institute’s purpose is to disseminate information, enable scientific and technical exchange, and encourage research and development for sustainability in the refrigeration sector. The IIR’s aim is to deploy these technologies around the world for the benefit of all, as well as to improve existing technologies to address the threats of environmental damage and resource depletion.
The IIR serves as an unbiased global source of scientific and technical expertise, coordinating research, publishing reference materials, and disseminating best practices and recommendations across the refrigeration value chain. It supports international cooperation through working groups, commissions, and conferences, providing a bridge between research, policy, and industry. The Institute’s work contributes directly to advancing innovation in natural refrigerants, energy-efficient systems, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring that refrigeration technologies meet environmental and safety standards worldwide.
Eurovent Certification joined the IIR as a corporate member in June 2025. Corporate membership is open to companies, laboratories, or national associations interested in the refrigeration sector. Members gain access to cutting-edge scientific research, international policy insights, and a global network of experts and organisations shaping the future of sustainable refrigeration. Benefits include increased visibility through participation in IIR events, working groups, and publications. By joining as corporate members, Eurovent Certification supports the work of the IIR, while accessing a powerful platform to engage with the global refrigeration community.
Assisting the work of organisations such as the IIR, helps to strengthen the entire HVACR industry. Indeed, the IIR and Eurovent Certification share in missions to advance sustainability, efficiency, and transparency. Both organisations promote environmentally responsible technologies and energy-efficient systems that support the transition to low-GWP refrigerants and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
This shared focus supports regulators in developing robust, evidence-based policies, and gives the industry trusted tools to design, specify, and operate efficient, high-performing HVACR systems worldwide - ultimately accelerating progress toward shared climate and sustainability goals.
We look forward to supporting the aims of the IIR and the opportunities to collaborate which lie ahead.
