Scope of the programme

The Eurovent Certified Performance (ECP) programme scope for Air Conditioners (AC) applies to factory-made units intended to produce either only cooled air for comfort air conditioning, or both cooled and heated air by reversing the cycle.

The AC programme is divided in three sub-programmes:

  • AC1: Comfort air cooled air conditioners and air/air heat pumps rated up to 12 kW cooling capacity, except double duct and single duct units
  • AC2: Comfort air conditioners rated from 12 kW up to, but not including, 50 kW cooling capacity
  • AC3: Comfort air conditioners rated from 50 kW up to 100 kW cooling capacity.

Companies may apply to participate in any of the above certification sub-programmes.

Multi-split units with 3 or more indoor units, single duct monobloc air conditioner and units not fulfilling the regulation 206/2012 are excluded from the scope of the AC1 Program.  In addition, single duct mono bloc mobile air conditioner and units not fulfilling the regulation 2016/2281 are excluded from the scope of AC2 and AC3 program. Full details of AC1, AC2 and AC3 sub programme exclusions can be found in the Technical Certification Rules.

AC programme participants are entitled upon request to become a participant of the Eurovent Heat Pumps (Eurovent HP) programme,

for all products certified under the present programme and falling under the scope of the Eurovent HP Technical Certification Rules.

Certify-all principle

Whenever a company participates in one of the sub-programmes for AC (AC1, AC2, AC3), all production models that are promoted by the applicant/participant to end-users, specifiers, trading companies, contractors by means of paper or electronic catalogue, price list or software within the scope of the programme, shall be certified. This is done in accordance with the Technical Certification Rules and includes all models in modular ranges. For the AC programme, the certify-all requirement as defined in the Certification Manual is applicable.

Product type

Air conditioners are used for thermal comfort for buildings. An air conditioner system is a mechanism designed to maintain and control the air temperature and humidity within an area. Air conditioners may also provide additional functionalities such as air purification, ventilation or supplemental air heating, by means of electric resistance heating.

Air conditioning systems are designed to offset lower density heat loads (e.g. heat generated by people, electronics, lighting etc.) and are typically used when buildings are occupied. Temperature control is on-demand and seasonal. Air conditioners are used in a wide range of applications, from office blocks to hotels, restaurants to retail and residential.

Air conditioners come in a wide range of different units and can be ducted or non-ducted. Unit types include:

  • Heat pumps (for heat delivery)
  • Comfort air conditioner / heat pump
  • Packaged unit
  • Single split unit
  • Multi split unit
  • Single-duct air conditioner
  • Double-duct air conditioner.

All air conditioning systems in the programme use a vapour compression cycle driven by an electric compressor. The two most common types of compressors are the ‘fixed speed’ type and the ‘variable speed’ (inverter) types. With conventional ‘fixed-speed’ air conditioners, the compressor is either on (working to 100% capacity) or off. An inverter in an air conditioner is used to change the compressor’s motor speed to drive variable refrigerant flow in an air conditioning system, to achieve the desired temperature conditions in indoor space. It maintains the desired temperatures without wild fluctuations.

Within the three AC sub programmes (AC1, AC2 and AC3), air conditioner types are placed into five searchable categories in the online certified product directory. These include:

  • Air to air, multi split, reversible (>12 kW)
  • Air to air, multi split, reversible (≤ 12 kW)
  • Air to air, split, cooling only (≤ 12 kW)
  • Air to air, split, reversible (> 12 kW)
  • Air to air, split, reversible (≤ 12 kW).
