"Cooling in a circuit with water-loop refrigeration cabinets."

The following presentation on water-loop refrigeration cabinets from EPTA Deutschland GmbH, gives an overview of the market and system related challenges, before moving onto water-loop system design, including a rundown of plug-in and semi-plug-in refrigerated display cabinets. The presentation also includes a case study featuring propane.

About the EUROVENT KÄLTE KOLLOQUIUM

Over two days, from 4th - 5th June 2024, operators, planners and manufacturers explored reliable refrigeration systems for the cold chain, "From Farm to Supermarket," in Wiesbaden, Germany. A comprehensive technical programme took delegates from theory to practical, with a mix of seminars and excursions, perfectly blended to encourage learning, discussion and networking in inspiring surroundings.

Organised by Eurovent Certification and COOLPLAN, with media partners CCI and KKA, day-one was hosted at the historic Kloster Eberbach. The extensive technical programme scrutinised the latest trends in refrigeration, decarbonisation and boldly tackled issues such as underperformance and its impact on food quality and energy efficiency.
Day-two put the theory into practice, with the chance to go explore cold food chain technology in its natural habitat, with excursions to a green farming market and NH3/CO2 logistics warehouse.

"Cooling in a circuit with Water-Loop refrigeration cabinets."

The eighth presentation of day-one saw Daniel Vöhringer, Head of Project Engineering at EPTA Deutschland GmbH, start with an overview of the market and system related challenges, including new legal requirements, skills shortages, increasing complexity of systems, energy saving, climate change, rising investment costs and complex on-site measures.

Moving onto water-loop system design, Daniel gave a system overview of plug-in refrigerated display cabinets, semi-plug-in refrigerated display cabinets and the structure of the refrigeration unit. Tackling full plant design, Daniel discussed dry coolers, pump stations, the pipe network, and line regulating valves. System regulation, monitoring and control was next on the list, before Dainel covered the practicalities of a water-loop system combined with a chiller and heat pump.

With system design covered, Daniel gave a case study of a real-life system comprising of a semi-plug-in water-loop system using propane condensing units and a propane direct evaporator. The project, in Rhineland, offered retrofit opportunities, showing how restructuring could be flexible. Next, he moved onto a direct comparison between a water-loop and CO2 system, including the investment costs and energy usage.

Finally, Daniel covered the classification of water-loops in the market. He discussed both the advantages and disadvantages, along with system choice for larger and smaller supermarkets. He finished by taking questions from delegates.
