Scope of the programme

The Eurovent Certified Performance (ECP) programme scope for Air Filters (FIL) covers air filter elements rated and sold as ISO ePM1, ISO ePM2.5 and ISO ePM10 according to EN ISO 16890-1:2016. Air filters must have a front frame size of 592x592mm according to standard EN 15805:2010, and with a nominal airflow between 0.24 and 1.5 m³/s. When a company joins the program, all relevant ISO ePM1, ISO ePM2.5 and ISO ePM10 air filter elements shall be certified.

As manufacturers may produce a large number of filters with different length/depth, there is a tolerance for the declaration of filters belonging to the same filter family. Already certified filters, with the same nominal airflow and with different length/depth of the overall filter element, within a tolerance of +/- 10% or 50 mm (whatever is the smaller) shall be included within the filter family. Air filters outside of this tolerance need to be declared.

The following filters are specifically excluded from the scope as set out in the Technical Certification Rules:

  • ISO Coarse filters
  • All combination filters with active carbon.

Certify-all principle

Whenever a company participates in the programme for air filters, all filters that are promoted by the applicant/participant to end-users, specifiers, trading companies, contractors by means of paper or electronic catalogue, price list or software within the scope of the programme, shall be certified, in accordance with the Technical Certification Rules. This includes all models in modular ranges. For the air filters programme, the certify-all requirement as defined in the Certification Manual is applicable to the European market and the Turkish market (since 1st January 2019).

Product type

Air filters are a HVAC system component, designed to remove harmful particles from the air. They can be used at different stages of air treatment and are utilised predominantly in air handling units (AHUs) and ventilation systems in buildings. Air filters operate in a wide range of commercial, industrial and residential applications. They are available in a number of designs and classes, using different filter media including glass and synthetic (or a mix of the two). Air filters impact on the energy efficiency of a system, accounting for around 15% of building energy costs. It is therefore important to ensure systems are using the correct filters to enhance indoor air quality and system efficiency.

Typically, an air filter will include a filter material and supporting parts and gaskets, that are inserted into a filter housing device. Air filters come in a range of designs including:

  • Bag
  • Filler mat
  • Panel
  • Pleated
  • V-type.

Filters also come in a range of classes which include three fine particle filter groups called particulate matter efficiency (ePMx), and one course particle group called ISO Coarse, for particles 10 micron or larger. Then ePMx is the efficiency of an air cleaning device to reduce the mass concentration of particles, with an optical diameter between 0,3 μm and x μm. ePMx is grouped into three groups, according to particle size filtered:

  • ISO ePM1 – for particles 0.3 micron to 1 micron in size
  • ISO ePM2.5 – for particles 0.3 micron to 2.5 micron in size
  • ISO ePM10 – for particles 0.3 micron to 10 micron in size.

Filter class
Is the filter class according to EN ISO 16890:2016, plus the percentage of particles it removes e.g. ISO ePM1 80%, would be a filter that removes 80% of PM1 particles.

ePM group according to ISO16890
Is the ePM group:

  • ePM1 – for particles 0.3 micron to 1 micron in size
  • ePM2.5 – for particles 0.3 micron to 2.5 micron in size
  • ePM10 – for particles 0.3 micron to 10 micron in size.

Face dimensions
Is the dimension of the face of the filter. Measured in mm.

Energy efficiency class according to ISO 16890
Is the energy efficiency class the product sits within according to EN ISO 16890:2016. Measured in percentage. 

Annual energy consumption
Is the estimated electricity consumption per year due to an air filter. Measured in kWh/annum.

Energy efficiency class NEW
For Eurovent energy classification, E is the lowest energy class rating while A+ the highest. 

Int. press. Drop at 100%, 50%, 75% & 125%
Is the initial pressure drop of the clean filter, operating at a 100% air flow rate, 50% air flow rate, 75% air flow rate or 125% air flow rate . Measured in Pa.

ePM1 Av. Eff.
Is the average efficiency of an ISO ePM1 filter to reduce the mass concentration of particles with an optical diameter between 0.3 micron to 1 micron in size. Measured in percentage. 

ePM1 Min. Eff.
Is the fractional efficiency, after applying the conditioning method defined in EN ISO 16890-4:2016, of an ISO ePM1 filter. Measured in percentage. 

ePM2.5 Av. Eff.
Is the average efficiency of an ISO ePM2.5 filter to reduce the mass concentration of particles with an optical diameter between 0.3 micron to 2.5 micron in size. Measured in percentage. 

ePM2.5 Min. Eff.
Is the fractional efficiency, after applying the conditioning method defined in EN ISO 16890-4:2016, of an ISO ePM2.5 filter. Measured in percentage. 

ePM10 Av. Eff.
Is the average efficiency of an ISO ePM10 filter to reduce the mass concentration of particles with an optical diameter between 0.3 micron to 10 micron in size. Measured in percentage. 

Airflow Rate
Is the test airflow volume rate. Measured in m3/s.  

Basic design
Is the type of filter. Options include bag, filter mat, panel, pleated and V-type.

Depth/Length
Is the overall depth of the filter including the frame (complete filter).  Measured in mm.

Filter Media
Is the type of filter media. Options include glass, glass / synthetic and synthetic.

No of bags or Vs
Is the number of bags for bag filters, or the number of Vs for V-type filters.

  • Eurovent Energy Efficiency Class is calculated from the annual energy consumption
  • Annual Energy Consumption.
