From 17-18 July, Brisbane in Australia played host to the Indoor Air Quality Conference 2023. Delegates gathered at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Brisbane for two days of illuminating presentations discussing all things Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Eurovent Certita Certification (ECC) were proud to act as a supporting sponsor, while Technical Manager, Dr Ali Nour Eddine stepped up to present, ‘Reliability of air handling unit data: Consequences for energy consumption and indoor air quality,’ on day two of the conference.

Bringing home the message that good quality indoor air is critical for good health, the Indoor Air Quality Conference 2023 was organised by the Australian Institute of Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH), and designed to provide members, and the broader industry, with a platform for discussing issues related to IAQ. This included policy advice, regulation development, and the development of (and access to) the latest industry-leading advice. The conference was created to promote a whole-of-supply-chain integrated view on issues related to indoor air quality, along with best-practice delivery in the Australian and international community.

Key topics explored included:

  • Indoor air quality, health, and wellbeing
  • Mega-trends and indoor air quality
  • Sustainable and healthy buildings
  • Regulation, standards, policy, guidelines, education
  • Building simulation and modelling
  • Chemistry, sources, transformations
  • Monitoring of indoor air quality
  • Ventilation and air cleaning
  • Drivers of indoor microbiological exposure
  • Cleaning, hygiene, and prevention of disease transmission.

Taking to the stage near the close of the conference at 4pm, ECC’s Dr Ali Nour Eddine’s seminar, ‘Reliability of air handling unit data: Consequences for energy consumption and indoor air quality,’ filled the 30-minute time slot with a whistle-stop tour of the consequences of inaccurate performance data on energy consumption, energy cost, indoor air quality and regulatory compliance.

Ali begin by giving an overview to the background of IAQ, including worldwide concerns, IAQ in general, IAQ in Australia, and the key topic of building energy consumption, both worldwide and in Australia. Moving onto the core of his presentation, Ali explored the consequences of wrongly declared Air Handling Unit (AHU) data, and it’s solution – third party certification. Next he discussed the benefits of choosing Eurovent certification and the specifics of the Eurovent Certified Performance mark for Air Handling Units, and the Hygienic AHU option. Finally, Ali talked through how to verify certified data using tools such as the energy efficiency label.

With Australians spending 90% of their time indoors and the country facing a number of air pollution problems, including those caused by burning fossil fuels and climate change issues such as wildfires, the Indoor Air Quality Conference 2023 was a vital event for ECC to sponsor, attend and speak at. The AIRAH organised conference offered fresh thinking on a number of IAQ related issues, showing that the technology and tools are available now to improve IAQ for everyone.
