Scope of the programme

The Eurovent Certified Performance (ECP) programme scope for Rotary Heat Exchangers (AARE), applies to all ranges of air-to-air regenerative heat exchangers (including sealing systems) which are included in the certified public selection software of the applicant/participant. Rotary heat exchangers are certified under three product types:

  • Condensing wheel
  • Enthaply wheel
  • Sorption wheel.

The applicant/participant shall certify all models in the ranges, including:

  • All rotary heat exchanger (RHE) geometry (wave height, foil thickness)
  • All sizes (rotor diameters and rotor depths and surface areas of alternating storage matrices - ASM)
  • All materials
  • All airflow rates
  • All different types of sealing (if available).

The Enthalpy and Sorption RHE has to fulfil specific requirements on the humidity efficiency. 

Certify-all principle

Whenever a company participates in the programme for RHEs, all applicable products that are promoted by the applicant/participant to end-users, specifiers, trading companies, contractors by means of paper or electronic catalogue, price list or software within the scope of the programme, shall be certified. This is done in accordance with the Technical Certification Rules and includes all models in modular ranges. For the rotary heat exchanger programme, the certify-all requirement is applicable not only to the European market but worldwide also, and is defined in the Certification Manual.

Product type

Air–to-air rotary heat exchangers, also known as regenerative heat exchangers, are designed to transfer thermal energy (sensible or total) via a rotating cylinder or wheel, from one air stream to another. They are typically used in heat recovery applications to reduce heating or cooling loads for both buildings and processes.

Air-to-air RHEs are typically used in systems utilising Air Handing Units (AHUs), but they can be used in other applications, such as in the exhaust gases of an industrial process. The heat exchangers are placed between the return and supply AHU to use the exhaust air to either pre-heat or pre-cool the incoming supply air. Heat is exchanged between the separate air streams by convection via a rotating cylinder or wheel, also known as a rotor. RHEs incorporate a heat transfer material, a drive mechanism, a casing or frame, and include any seals which are provided to retard the bypassing and leakage of air from one air stream to the other. Due to the design, there can be some slight mixing of air streams, which means these heat exchangers are not suitable for applications where strong smells or toxic fumes will affect air quality.

Under the programme, product types include:

  • Condensing wheel: condensation RHE / non hygroscopic RHE / non enthalpy RHE
  • Enthaply wheel: Enthaply RHE /enthalpy hygroscopic RHE
  • Sorption wheel: Sorption RHE including enthalpy sorption RHE.

Certified product types in the rotary heat exchanger programme have some, but not all the following search criteria in common. 

Brand
Brand name of the manufacturer.

Range 
Listing of models with some common features.

Model
Model name.

Basic material
Is the basic material of the rotary heat exchanger. Can also include wheel type.

Diameter
Is the diameter of the rotor. Measured in mm. 

Internal length
Is the internal length of the rotor. Measured in mm.

Purge angle
Is the angle of the purge sector. Measured in degrees.

Wave height
Is the mean height of one wave, including one flat foil thickness. Measured in mm.

Wave height

Wave length
Is the mean length of one wave, obtained from the length of the arc corresponding to 10 waves. Measured in mm.

Wave length

Thickness 
The thickness of the foil material. Measured in mm.

Rotor speed
Is the speed of the rotor. Measured in rpm.

DP at 1 m/s, DP at 2 m/s and DP at 3 m/s
Is the loss in total pressure between the inlet and the outlet of the unit within one air stream, at either 1 m/s, 2 m/s or 3 m/s. Measured in Pa.

Summer temperature eff. at 1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s
Is the ratio of temperature differences, between the exhaust air inlet, exhaust air outlet, supply air inlet and supply air outlet, at either 1 m/s, 2 m/s or 3 m/s, under summer conditions. Measured in percentage. Applicable to enthalpy and sorption wheel RHEs.

Winter temperature eff. at 1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s
Is the ratio of temperature differences, between the exhaust air inlet, exhaust air outlet, supply air inlet and supply air outlet, at either 1 m/s, 2 m/s or 3 m/s, under winter conditions. Measured in percentage. 

Summer humidity efficiency at 1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s
Is the ratio of absolute humidity differences, between the exhaust air inlet, exhaust air outlet, supply air inlet and supply air outlet, at either 1 m/s, 2 m/s or 3 m/s, under summer conditions. Measured in percentage. Applicable to enthalpy and sorption wheel RHEs.

Winter humidity efficiency at 1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s
Is the ratio of absolute humidity differences, between the exhaust air inlet, exhaust air outlet, supply air inlet and supply air outlet, at either 1 m/s, 2 m/s or 3 m/s, under winter conditions. Measured in percentage.

Qv @ 1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s
Is the nominal air flow rate at either 1 m/s, 2 m/s or 3 m/s. Measured in m3/h.

OACF sealing system 1 with purge
Is the Outdoor Air Correction Factor (OACF) of the primary sealing system with purge sector. It is the ratio of the entering supply mass airflow rate, and the leaving supply mass airflow rate, with the purge sector in operation. 

  • If OACF>1: the outdoor air mass flow is higher than the supply air mass flow
  • If OACF=1: the outdoor air mass flow equals the supply air mass flow
  • If OACF<1: the outdoor air mass flow is lower than the supply air mass flow.

OACF sealing system 1 without purge
Is the Outdoor Air Correction Factor (OACF) of the primary sealing system without purge sector. It is the ratio of the entering supply mass airflow rate, and the leaving supply mass airflow rate, without the purge sector in operation. Options are OACF>1, OACF=1 and OACF<1.

EATR sealing system 1 with purge
Is the Exhaust Air Transfer Ratio (EATR) of the primary sealing system with purge sector. It is the transfer of exhaust air, into the supply air side, in air to air regenerative heat exchangers. EATR provides information on the level of the percentage of the exhaust air in the supply air. 

EATR sealing system 1 without purge 
Is the Exhaust Air Transfer Ratio (EATR) of the primary sealing system without purge sector. It is the transfer of exhaust air, into the supply air side, in air to air regenerative heat exchangers. EATR provides information on the level of the percentage of the exhaust air in the supply air.
