SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME

The Eurovent Certified Performance (ECP) programme scope for Chilled Beams (CB) applies to all Active and Passive chilled beams of the applicant / participant. 

Chilled ceilings radiant heating panels are excluded from the programme.

CERTIFY-ALL PRINCIPLE

Whenever a company participates in the programme for chilled beams, all chilled beam ranges must be certified. This applies to all product ranges, which have either catalogue leaflets with product details, including technical data, or similar product information in electronic format. Eurovent Certita Certification certifies the performances of the ranges, as presented in their selection tool.

The certify-all principle applies for the whole world.

PRODUCT TYPE

Chilled beams provide thermal comfort for buildings. They are essentially large heat exchangers, which work by convective heat transfer. Depending on the type of chilled beam – passive or active - this convection will be natural or forced.

Passive chilled beams

Rely on natural convection to cool a space. Units are either recessed and installed above a perforated ceiling, or installed mounted under the ceiling (exposed) with a perforated face or linear bar grille.

Passive chilled beam components (exposed system):

  • Housing (or casing)
  • Cooling coil
  • Perforated face or linear bar grille.

Cold water from a chiller system is fed through a cold water loop to a cooling coil in a two pipe design. Warm air from the space rises up towards the ceiling and comes into contact with the chilled beam. The air is cooled by the coil and falls back into the space. As the cooled air circulates through the room, it will pick up heat and rise back up to the ceiling, where it will enter the chilled beam to start the process again.

Active chilled beams

Rely on forced convection to either cool, or cool and heat a space. Units are usually recessed in the ceiling so the diffuser sits flush, but they can be suspended from the ceiling also.

Active chilled beam components:

  • Housing (or casing)
  • Primary airflow inlet
  • Plenum 
  • Induction nozzel
  • Cooling coil(s)
  • Heating coil(s) – only in systems providing heating
  • Diffuser.

Systems can either be configured as two-pipe for cooling only, or four-pipe for cooling and heating. In cooling mode, cold water from a chiller system is fed through a cold water loop to a cooling coil. For units that provide heat, hot water from a boiler is fed through a hot water loop to the heating coil.

Active chilled beams have a primary air connection fed from a separate ventilation system. Primary air enters the unit into the plenum. From the plenum, air is pushed through induction nozzles and out into the room through the diffuser. This creates a high-velocity air stream and a low pressure area in the centre of the face of the diffuser, directly under the cooling / heating coil(s). 

The air in the area of low pressure is pulled up into the chilled beam, passing through the coil. The cooled or heated air mixes with the ventilated air that’s been pushed through the induction nozzle, and is delivered into the room via the diffuser. Just as in passive beams, the room air circulates, and is drawn into the area of low pressure. It is pulled into the chilled beam and the cycle continues.

Is the height of the coil in mm.

Fin material
Is the material the fin is made from. 

Fin spacing
Is the spacing between the fins in mm.

Pipe material
Is the material the pipe is made from.

Pipe shape
Is the shape of the internal pipe - rifled or smooth.

Pipe pattern
Is the pipe pattern, including:

  • Parallel
  • Rectangular
  • Serial
  • Shifted
  • Square
  • Staggered
  • Triangular.

No. of tubes
Is the number of tubes. 

No. of rows
Is the number of rows. 

Plenum geometry
Is the shape of the plenum in active chilled beams, including:

  • Polygon
  • Rectangular
  • Round
  • Square
  • Trapezoidal
  • Triangular. 

Diffuser geometry
Is the shape of the diffuser in active chilled beams:

  • Grille
  • Linear
  • Linear slot
  • Rectangular 
  • Round.

Or the discharge type:

  • One way
  • Two ways
  • Three ways
  • Four ways.

CERTIFIED CHARACTERISTICS

The following performance shall be certified and verified by tests:

For passive chilled beams:

  • Cooling capacity in compliance with the requirements of EN14518, including testing with three values of Δθ.
  • Water pressure drop.

For active chilled beams:

  • Cooling capacity in compliance with the requirements of EN15116 - three values of air flow rate (nominal air flow rate, 80 and 120% of the nominal air flow rate), for the nominal temperature difference (8K) only for the nominal water flow rate.
  • Water pressure drop.
