"Planning, tendering and operation of R744 green building concepts."

Green buildings are becoming increasingly important on the road to net zero. Find out more from REWE Deutscher Supermarkt AG & Co. KGaA, about their green farming market pilot store in Wiesbaden, and the journey to create a new building standard.

About the EUROVENT KÄLTE KOLLOQUIUM

Over two days, from 4th - 5th June 2024, operators, planners and manufacturers joined together in in Wiesbaden, Germany, to explore reliable refrigeration systems for the cold chain, "From Farm to Supermarket." A comprehensive technical programme took delegates from theory to practical, with a mix of seminars and excursions, perfectly blended to encourage learning, discussion and networking in inspiring surroundings.

Organised by Eurovent Certification and COOLPLAN, with media partners CCI and KKA, day-one was hosted at the historic Kloster Eberbach. The extensive technical programme scrutinised the latest trends in refrigeration, decarbonisation and boldly tackled issues such as underperformance and its impact on food quality and energy efficiency.

Day-two put the theory into practice, with the chance to go explore cold food chain technology in its natural habitat, with excursions to a green farming market and NH3/CO2 logistics warehouse.

"Planning, tendering and operation of R744 green building concepts."

The fourth presentation of the first day saw a double act from REWE Deutscher Supermarkt AG & Co. KGaA, Tobias Frey and Manfred Rössling. Tobias, REWE’s Head of Construction Energy Management, was first up. After introducing himself and the company, Tobias discussed the necessity of climate neutrality and the emergence of the ‘green building.’ Telling the story of REWE’s journey, which started with the opening of a pilot green building store in Berlin Rudow in 2009, he then described how REWE progressed the concept by opening an architectural competition to create a new building standard for green farming in 2016. Showing delegates a timeline of the project, Tobias then delved into a full case study of ‘green farming as a pilot market.’

The green farming market incorporates a supermarket with a roof farm for fish and basil at a pilot store in Wiesbaden. Tobias ran through the architecture concepts, HVAC equipment and specification, emphasising that Rewe Group only uses natural refrigerants for all new buildings and replacement refrigeration systems.

Focusing in on HVAC, Tobias discussed the balancing act required to optimise all areas, from the HVAC system to the building envelope. Using monitoring equipment through Building Management Systems, Tobias told of the range of performance data REWE can access from their stores to ensure refrigeration systems are performing as expected, and that any issues are detected early. Emphasising that new technology brings new possibilities, Tobias then acknowledged the importance of certification as a benchmark of performance.

The last few slides saw Manfred give an overview of the green farming market and some of the features that would be seen when delegates visited the site on the following day’s excursion. Questions from the audience were taken to end the presentation.
