French distributors, their technological partners and institutions were brought together for Perifem Day #5 at 3 Mazarium, Paris on Wednesday, 20th March 2024. Some 550 delegates, including Eurovent Certification’s France Partnership Manager, Sophie Bocquillon, engaged in a public debate around the key topics of safety, energy, the environment, and technological innovation.

The event was structured around round tables, reports, and panel discussions. It attracted the participation of top speakers, with 10 top executives at the round tables. The four major themes discussed included:

  • Climate (carbon, energy, water, biodiversity)
  • Circular economy (packaging, waste, second-hand)
  • Security
  • Accessibility

In his introduction, Henri Bourgeois Costa from Tara Ocean Foundation explored the impact of +4oC on our cold, our consumption, and our buildings. He raised the grim point that, "There are no carbon or water issues if there are no living issues". Continuing that, "The environment must not be competitive but collaborative, the stakes are too high."

The topic of climate was central to those in the HVAC and refrigeration industry. Across the discussions it was agreed that reducing energy and water consumption, and eliminating refrigerant leaks are key concerns. Measures need to be implemented including:

  • Replacing refrigerants with "natural" fluids with a lower GWP
  • Replacing existing refrigerated cabinet installations with independent refrigeration units with doors
  • The sustained uptake of heat pump solutions
  • The use of adiabatic systems
  • Commitment to ISO 50 001 "energy management" procedures
  • Implementation of Building Management Systems (BMS).

Moving onto the circular economy, Perifem day next tackled the subjects of recycling, plastics reduction of waste and reuse of products and materials, before discussing the topics of safety and accessibility.

The event was great success in bringing together the main distribution players to reflect, exchange and decide on the ways forward to create a more responsible commercial ecosystem.
