ABOUT THE INTERPRETATION OF ECODESIGN REGULATION (EU) 2016/2281
After the consultations done with TC 113/WG 7, who is in charge of EN 14825 standard, it has been clarified that F(2) factor is only applied to the calculation of 'seasonal space cooling efficiency’ (ηs,c) of the ground coupled water-to-water and brine-to-water units. Correspondingly, all ηs,c values of concerned units have been corrected in the ‘Certified Product Directory’. The further information related to this modification can be found in the article of Eurovent Association, titled as “Eurovent 6/17 - 2020: Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2016/2281”.
The scope of the LCP-HP program covers the standard air and water(brine) source chillers and hydronic heat pumps used for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration applications, which are equipped with any type of electrically-driven compressors. The intended use of the certified models can be residential, commercial, or industrial.
The company participating in this certification program shall certify all the cooling-only and reversible standard production models with a cooling capacity at the standard rating conditions below the limits given in the program specific TCR document. The units with higher capacities than those given in the TCR, heating-only units, multipurpose units (4-pipe units), process chillers can also be certified as an option by the participants.
The market-specific certification for India and/or Middle East are also available as an option for the participants.
The following units are specifically excluded from the scope:
chillers and heat pumps powered by other than electric-motor drives
free cooling units
partial & total heat recovery modes for chillers/heat pumps (please see the Note-1 below)
6-pipes units
evaporative cooled units
the units specifically designed for domestic hot water (DHW) or sanitary hot water (SHW)
the units specifically designed for process/district heating applications with water outlet temperatures above the standard rating conditions in EN 14511-2
Within the scope of this program, the certification of the selection tools is mandatory, which may be online or can be installed. Each certified model shall be available only in one software in accordance with the certification rules, in case the participant has several software.
Note-1 : The 2-pipe units with heat recovery mode (partial or total heat recovery) are included in the scope, but only the performances, when the heat recovery mode is OFF, are certified.
The definitions for the product types covered by this program are as follows.
Comfort Chiller: A unit designed to cool or heat (applicable only for reversible chillers) liquid, using an evaporator, a condenser, a refrigerant compressor, and appropriate controls. Leaving chilled water temperatures for cooling mode are greater than or equal to + 2 °C. Also known as a liquid chilling package.
Heat pump: A unit designed only to heat liquid, using an evaporator, a condenser, a refrigerant compressor, and appropriate controls. Also known as a hydronic heat pump.
2+2-pipe Multipurpose chiller: A chiller designed to cool and heat the liquid simultaneously with two different water loops. For its cooling-only and heating-only function, the same water loop can be used. The second water loop is generally used for domestic hot water during heating-only or during the simultaneous cooling and heating function.
4-pipe Multipurpose chiller: A chiller designed to cool and heat the liquid simultaneously with two different water loops. For its cooling-only and heating-only function, the same water loop cannot be used.
Process chiller: A chiller capable of cooling down and continuously maintaining the temperature of a liquid in order to provide cooling to a refrigerated appliance or to a process cooling system.
The heat source options of the units are as follows.
Air-cooled or Air to water: It means that heat is taken from the outside air and transferred to the indoor water-based system during the units heating function. For cooling function, the unit extracts the heat from the indoor water-based system and transfers it to the outside air.
Water-cooled or Water to water: It means that heat is taken from the outdoor water loop and transferred to the indoor water-based system during the units heating function. For cooling function, the unit extracts the heat from the indoor water-based system and transfers it to the outdoor water which might be sent to a cooling tower/water loop system or a ground loop.
Unit structure is split in two different categories below.
Packaged: Factory assembly of components of refrigeration system fixed on a common mounting to form a discrete unit
Split: Factory assembly of components of refrigeration system fixed on two mountings to form a discrete matched functional unit
With the combinations of the given three main characteristics above, product types are defined. Such as, Comfort chiller, air-cooled, packaged, cooling only or Heat pump, water to water, packaged, heating only, etc.
The conditions of certified performances are provided by using the initials of the heat sources (A-air and W-water) and by giving first the outdoor side and then the indoor side. Such as:
A35/W12-7 = Outdoor side air temperature 35 °C / Indoor side water inlet 12 °C and water outlet 7 °C
W30-35/Wm19-m25 = Outdoor side water inlet 30 °C and water outlet 35 °C / Indoor side water inlet -19 °C and water outlet -25 °C
If a unit has an integrated water pump, then available (serviceable) pressure performance filter should be used.
TER (total efficiency ratio) refers the ratio of the sum of the simultaneous cooling and heating capacity to the power input of the unit when the chilled water outlet is 7 °C and heated water outlet is 45 °C.
Capacity control refers the ability of a unit to change its heating or cooling capacity by changing the volumetric flow rate of the refrigerant. The values on our website are declared in accordance with EN 14825. Hence, units are indicated as fixed if the unit cannot change its volumetric flow rate, staged if the volumetric flow rate is changed or varied in series of not more than two steps, or variable if the volumetric flow rate is changed or varied in series of three or more steps.
Compressor motor type indicates how the compressor motor(s) of the unit is driven. The values can be as follows.
AC: Unit compressor is driven by alternating current.
VSD: AC motor compressor is equipped with a variable speed drive.
DC: Unit compressor is driven by direct current.
BLDC: Unit compressor has a brushless DC motor.
They are also combined as AC + VSD, AC + DC, AC + BLDC, VSD + DC, etc. when each refrigerant circuit of the unit has different compressor motor type.
Example : In order to search an air to water non-ducted packaged cooling only chillers operating with R410A refrigerant, with a capacity up to 120 kW capacity, an EER between 3 and 3,5, a sound power up to 75 db(A), and an indoor side pressure drop up to 40 kPA, then the following advanced search filters shall be filled in as given below, after selecting the ‘Comfort chiller, air-cooled, packaged, cooling only’ product type,
