With COP28 at a close, it’s time to reflect on the events of the UN Climate Change Conference. Held from 30th November - 12th December, at Expo City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the conference concluded the first ever Global Stocktake - a process whereby countries and stakeholders shared where they’re collectively making progress (or not) towards meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. After some terse discussion, COP28 also saw countries commit to further action on climate change.

While the global stocktake loomed large, that wasn’t the only focus of the event. More than 70,000 delegates were expected through the doors, to participate in 285 press conferences, 152 Global Climate Action events, 366 side events and 195 exhibits, along with a whole host of additional meetings, conferences, presentations, podium discussions and poster sessions, organised both on and off site to complement the official COP28 programme.

Of the 366 official side events, Eurovent Middle East partnered up with UNEP to jointly host two. The first, held on 3rd December in the Montreal Protocol Advancing Climate Action Pavilion (Ozone Cool Zone), consisted of a roundtable on technical developments in cooling for hot ambient temperature countries, called “Low Emission Cooling in HAT Countries: Technical Developments.” The roundtable covered the conundrum of dealing with extreme temperatures and increased cooling demand, resulting in a vicious cycle of increased greenhouse gas emissions.

The second, on 6th December, also in the Ozone Cool Zone, was a panel discussion on certification aspects and capacity building, entitled “The Need for Certification: from Products to People”. Eurovent Certita Certification’s Senior Technical Manager, Ali Alexandre Nour Eddine joined discussion panel, as part of a team of experts debating what other kinds of certification (aside from already existing product certification schemes) need to be considered, in a world where even the most efficient product will not deliver its designed performance if not used, installed, operated, and maintained correctly. Ali put forward the importance of certifying the whole supply chain of an HVAC product, from production to installation, and discussed the steps being taken by Eurovent Certita Certification to ensure the best quality in all aspects of the supply chain.

However, that was not the only speaking duties for Ali, who had previously joined the presentation line-up at the 1st Middle East Mechanical Engineers Summit! Held from 1st - 2nd December at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Dubai, the event theme was, "Empowering Filipino Mechanical Engineers: Pioneering Sustainable Excellence Through Unity and Professionalism." Created to promote innovation and foster knowledge sharing, the Summit brought together hundreds of Filipino mechanical engineers from different countries including the Philippines, Singapore, Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and UAE. Ali had the pleasure of presenting, “Certification, Energy Labelling and Life cycle cost” to a keen audience on 2nd December, covering the importance of certification in improving energy efficiency, the role of energy labelling and the power of understanding whole life cycle cost.

Eurovent Certita Certification would like to give thanks to Eurovent Middle East and UNEP, as well as the organisers of the 1st Middle East Mechanical Engineers Summit, for the opportunity to get involved in these prestigious events.
