Scope of the program

This programme applies to standard chillers and hydronic heat pumps (technically named 2-pipe units) used for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration. They may operate with any type of compressor (hermetic, semi-hermetic and open) but only electrically driven chillers are included. Only refrigerants authorised in EU are considered. Units may be air-cooled or liquid cooled. Reverse cycle liquid chillers shall be certified in cooling and heating mode.

Heating-only hydronic heat pumps can be certified as an option.

NEW  The 4-pipe units, also named multi-purpose/multi-function units, can be certified as an option 

The following units are specifically excluded from the certification programme:

  • chillers and heat pumps powered by other than electric motor drives
  • free cooling units
  • Partial & total heat recovery modes for chillers / heat pumps
  • 6-pipes units
  • Evaporative cooled units

Note: The 2 pipe units with heat recovery mode (partial or total heat recover) are included in the scope, as cooling only chillers, but the heat recovery function is not certified.

The programme covers all chillers and hydronic heat pumps with the limitation of cooling capacities of approved independent laboratories. The company participating in this certification programme shall certify all standard production models below the following cooling capacity at standard conditions (see Table 1).

Other types of unit and higher capacity units can be certified in option.

Options:

Air source units above 600 kW

Air source units above 600 kW capacities can be certified as an option in Participant Laboratory (see IV.3 Eurovent Certita Certification tests at the laboratory).

Maximum capacities for air source units are defined for each participant according to the capacity of the participant’s laboratory and with a maximum at 2000 kW in cooling and heating mode (for the air conditioning application).

Water source units above 1500 kW   NEW

Water source units above 1500 kW capacities can be certified as an option in Participant Laboratory (see IV.3Eurovent Certita Certification tests at the laboratory).

Maximum capacities for water source units are defined for each participant according to the capacity of the participant’s laboratory.

These 2 options can be chosen independently.

For heating-only hydronic heat pumps

Heating-only hydronic heat pumps can be certified as an option. If a participant applies to this option, all standard production models below the above mentioned maximum heating capacities at standard conditions have to be declared.

For 60 Hz units

As the “certify all” principle only applies to units intended for the European market (see definition of “Europe” in the Certification manual), it is not mandatory to declare 60 Hz units.

Moreover, these units can be certified by range.

For Process chillers

High temperature process chillers can be certified as an option. If the participant applies to this option, all standard production models below 600 kW for air-cooled units and below 1500 kW for water-cooled units have to be declared.

The units above these limits shall be declared if the manufacturer has their own laboratory able to test them. The limit is fixed to the limits of its lab.

Low temperature process chillers (Low Brine chillers) or Medium temperature process chillers (Medium Brine chillers) can be certified as an option in Participant Laboratory.

For 4-pipe units        NEW

The 4 pipe units can be certified as an option. These units can be splitted in the 2 types (see RS – § Definition):

  • 4-pipe units (Type A)
  • 2+2 pipe units (Type B1 & B2)

All types of 4 pipes shall be declared:

  -           up to 600 kW for air-cooled units

  -           up to 1200 kW for water-cooled.

The units above these limits shall be declared if the manufacturer has their own laboratory able to test them. The limit is fixed to the limits of its laboratory.

Definitions

2.1 Liquid Chilling Package 
A factory assembled unit, designed to cool liquid, using a compressor, an evaporator and an integral and appropriate controls.

Definitions in red are in accordance with EN14511-1 (2013)

2.2 Cooling capacity 

Heat given off from the heat transfer medium to the unit per unit time (kW).

2.3 Power Input

Average electrical power input of the liquid chilling package within the defined interval of time obtained from:
a) the power input for operation of the compressor(s) and any power input for defrosting;
b) the power input of all control and safety devices of the unit;
c) proportional power input of the conveying devices (e.g. fans, pumps) for ensuring the transport of the heat transfer media inside the unit.

2.4 Energy efficiency Ratio (EER)
Ratio of the cooling capacity to the power input of the unit.

2.5 Part load
Operation at partial capacity

2.6 Load rate (noted LR only for the cooling mode of air conditioning chillers)
The ratio of the cooling capacity at partial capacity and reduced condenser inlet water or air temperature to the cooling capacity at the standard rating conditions with the following rating conditions:
- For air cooled chillers:
1. The leaving water temperature is set at 7°C
2. The evaporator water-flow rate is equal to the standard rating water-flow rate. 
3. The air-flow rate is controlled by the chiller

- For water cooled chillers:
1. The leaving water temperature is set at 7°C
2. The evaporator and condenser water-flow rate is equal to the standard rating water-flow rates
3. The condenser water flow rate is controlled by the chiller. If the chiller doesn’t control it, the condenser water flow rate will be equal to the standard rating water flow rate.

2.7 Heating capacity 
Heat given off by the unit to the heat transfer medium per unit of time (kW). 

2.8 Coefficient of Performance (COP)
Ratio of the heating capacity to the power input of the unit.

2.9 Liquid pressure drop on evaporator 
Chilled liquid internal pressure difference between inlet and outlet of evaporator. 

2.10 Liquid pressure drop on condenser 
Condenser liquid internal pressure difference between inlet and outlet of condenser. 

2.11 Available pressure 
Available liquid pressure for units with integrated pump. 

2.12 Air pressure drop on condenser
Condenser air internal pressure difference between inlet and outlet. 

2.13 A-weighted sound power level 
Sound power level radiated by the air cooled chiller. 

Certified characteristics

Chillers and reversible chillers:

The following performances at standard conditions shall be certified:

  • Cooling capacity [kW]
  • Energy efficiency Ratio (EER) [-]
  • Water pressure drop at evaporator in cooling [kPa]
  • Water pressure drop at condenser in cooling for water-to-water units [kPa]
  • Heating capacity for reverse cycle units [kW]
  • Coefficient of Performance (COP) for reverse cycle units [-]
  • Water pressure drop at evaporator in heating for reverse cycle water-to-water units [kPa]
  • Water pressure drop at condenser in heating for reverse cycle chillers [kPa]
  • A-weighted sound power level for Air Cooled Units in cooling mode [dB(A)]

All ratings refer to a fouling factor equal to zero.

From 1st January 2018 and for relevant units :

  • Total Efficiency Ratio (TER) [-] for 4-pipe units                                             NEW
  • Seasonal Efficiency in Cooling (SEER & ηsc) [-] for comfort chillers            NEW
  • Seasonal Energy performance ratio (SEPR) [-] for process chillers             NEW

Supplementary performances can be certified as an option:

  • Psb, LRcontmin and CcpLRcontmin in cooling and heating
  • ISEER according to Indian Standard                                                             NEW
  • T3 (46°C) & Operability at 52°C according to Middle East Standards           NEW

From 26 September 2015 and for relevant units:

  • Capacity at Pdesignh [kW]
  • Seasonal Efficiency (SCOP & ηs) [-]
  • A-weighted sound power level for Air Cooled Units in heating mode [dB(A)] 

Heat Pumps (Heating only):

The following performances at standard conditions shall be certified for heating-only Heat Pumps:

  • Heating capacity [kW]
  • Coefficient of Performance (COP) for the same conditions of the heating capacity [-]
  • Water pressure drop at evaporator in heating mode for water-to-water units [kPa]
  • Water pressure drop at condenser in heating mode [kPa]
  • A-weighted sound power level for air source units in heating mode at +7°C [Lw(A)]

All ratings refer to a fouling factor equal to zero.

  • Psb, LRcontmin and CcpLRcontmin in heating

From 26 September 2015 and for relevant units:

  • Capacity at Pdesignh [kW]
  • Seasonal Efficiency (SCOP & ηs) [-]
  • A-weighted sound power level for Air Cooled Units in heating mode [dB(A)]

The published literature or computer programme for all the products shall include all the certified performances.
