Low-temperature radiators: correct sizing remains the cornerstone of a successful heat pump installation

Aug 25, 2026

The growing popularity of heat pumps in residential and commercial buildings puts radiator sizing back at the heart of the project. A radiator is not just a heating terminal: it is the component that transfers heat to the room. Its output depends on its design, heat exchange surface area, flow rate, temperature regime and installation conditions.

With a heat pump, the analysis must be based on the entire system. The lower the water temperature can be maintained, the more likely the heat pump is to operate efficiently. However, this reduction in temperature also reduces the heat output of a given radiator. Correct sizing therefore involves ensuring that each room has the necessary heat output to compensate for its heat losses, whilst allowing the heat pump to operate at a temperature range compatible with the performance objectives.

In renovation projects, a common mistake is to assume that the existing radiators will suffice simply because they previously heated the property. However, the old heat pump often operated at a higher water temperature. When this temperature is lowered, the available heat output may become insufficient, particularly in rooms with the highest heat loss or in older properties that are still inadequately insulated.

In new-build projects, the challenge is different but equally crucial. Heating requirements are lower, buildings are better insulated and heating emitters can be planned right from the design stage. Low-temperature radiators therefore offer a solution to be integrated into a holistic approach: room-by-room comfort, precise control, compact design and compatibility with a hot water circuit supplied by a heat pump or other low-temperature heat sources.

Certified data plays a decisive role here. Radiator certification schemes provide verified performance figures, in particular thermal outputs in accordance with the applicable test conditions. The EN 442 standard sets out the requirements for radiators in terms of performance, safety and testing. The CE marking, issued under the manufacturer’s responsibility, certifies that the product complies with these regulatory requirements.

The voluntary NF certification goes further and provides an additional level of assurance. It is based on independent verification of the declared performance and regular monitoring of production. For installers and design consultancies, this certified information provides a reliable benchmark for accurately sizing installations and minimising the risks of under- or oversizing.

NF-certified water-filled radiators are part of this drive towards greater reliability. By providing access to verified specifications, they enable solutions to be compared on a consistent technical basis and ensure the accuracy of power calculations. In a system combined with a heat pump, where a few degrees’ difference in water temperature can alter the balance between comfort and performance, this documented reliability provides concrete support for specification and installation.

Sizing does not end with the choice of product. Installation also affects the power actually available. Insufficient clearance from the floor or wall, recessed fitting or an obstacle in front of the radiator can disrupt convection and reduce heat diffusion. Manufacturers’ recommendations must therefore be taken into account on a par with thermal calculations.

Finally, funding schemes linked to energy-saving certificates may incorporate specific technical criteria for low-temperature radiators and thermostatic heads, depending on whether the application is residential or commercial. Here too, the accuracy of the data and the sizing calculations is crucial.

To ensure the success of a heat pump-radiator installation, the best approach remains to calculate heat losses, define the target water flow rate, select suitable radiators, check the installation conditions and document performance using reliable data. It is this overall consistency that transforms a promise of performance into a measurable result in practice.
