Scope of the programme

This certification programme is divided into four sub-programmes:

- AC1: comfort units with cooling capacity up to 12 kW

- AC2: comfort units with cooling capacityfrom 12 to 45 kW

- AC3: comfort units with cooling capacityfrom 45 to 100 kW

- CC: Close Control Air Conditioners up to 100 kW

This programme applies to factory-made units intended to produce cooled air for comfort air conditioning (AC1, AC2, AC3) or close control air conditioning (CC). It also applies to units intended for both cooling and heating by reversing the cycle. For the AC1 programme class G units are excluded.
Participating Companies must certify all production models within the scope of the programme they enter. However concerning multi-split air conditioners only systems with two indoor units are included.

Definitions

2.1 Air conditioner
An air conditioner is an encased assembly or assemblies designed as a unit to provide conditioned air to an enclosed space. It includes an electrically operated refrigeration system for cooling and possibly dehumidifying the air. It may have means for heating, circulating, cleaning and humidifying the air. Where such equipment is provided in more than one assembly, the separate assemblies are to be used together.
An air conditioner may be built as:
a) Packaged air conditioner: a factory assembly of components of a refrigeration system fixed on a common mounting to form a single unit.
b) Split air conditioner: a factory assembly of components of a refrigeration system fixed on two or more mountings to form a matched functional unit.

2.2 Comfort air conditioner
Unit designed to satisfy the comfort requirements of the occupant of the air conditioned enclosure.

2.3 Direct expansion close control air conditioner
Unit containing complete refrigeration system, designed to satisfy the requirements of the process carried out in the conditioned enclosure.

2.4 Chilled water close control air conditioner
Factory built assembly designed to satisfy requirements of the process carried out in the conditioned enclosure; it is connected to a chilled fluid generator which contains a refrigeration circuit.

2.5 Total cooling capacity
Heat removed by the air conditioner from air within a defined interval of time.

2.6 Sensible cooling capacity
Capacity of the unit for removing sensible heat from the evaporator intake air.

2.7 Heating capacity
Heat supplied by the reverse cycle air conditioner to air within a defined interval of time.

2.8 Effective power input
Average electrical power input to the unit obtained from:
- the power input for operation of the compressor and any power input for defrosting excluding additional electrical heating devices not used for defrosting
- the power input of all control and safety devices of the unit
- the proportional power input of the conveying devices (e.g., fans, pumps) for ensuring the transport of the heat transfer media inside the air conditione.

2.9 A-weighted sound power
A single figure on a specific scale which can be related to the subjective assessment of the loudness of a noise.

Testing requirements

Standard ratings shall be established at the standard rating conditions specified in the section "Rating requirements" of the Rating Standards. All standard ratings shall be verified by tests conducted in accordance with the following standards:

3.1 Performance testing:
EN 14511
“ Air conditioners, liquid chilling packages and heat pumps with electrically driven compressors for space heating and cooling”.

3.2 Acoustic testing:
EN 12102
"Air conditioners, liquid chilling packages, heat pumps and dehumidifiers with electrically driven compressors for space heating and cooling - Measurement of airbone noise - Determination of the sound power level" with exception of the duct end correction method described in section 6.2.2 of this standard.

Specifications concerning temperature conditions and installation of units for acoustical testing are defined in the Document RS 6/C/006.





Rating requirements

Performance testing
Standard rating conditions in Table 1 are used. The ambient temperature surrounding units or parts with duct connection on the air inlet and outlet sides are set between 15°C and 30°C.

* This temperature applies to such equipment where the wet bulb temperature affects the heat exchange in the outdoor side (unit using latent heat of water as all or portion of the heat source or sink for the outdoor heat exchanger).

** The water flow rate for the heating test shall be the same as used for the cooling test.

*** If the manufacturers' water flow rate is the constant, it is allowable for the water out temperature to differ from the figure shown.

**** Or manufacturers recommended minimum temperature whichever is the higher.

 

Certified characteristics

The following characteristics of comfort air conditioners are verified by tests :
a) Total cooling capacity
b) Heating capacity for reverse cycle units
c) Energy efficiency ratio (Cooling mode)
d) Coefficient of performance (Heating mode)
e) A-weighted sound power indoor side (non ducted units)
f) A-weighted sound power outdoor side (non ducted units)
g) A-weighted sound power radiated from the duct (ducted units)

 

The following characteristics of close control air conditioners are verified by tests:
a) Total cooling capacity
b) Sensible cooling capacity
c) Energy efficiency ratio (except for chilled water units)
d) A-weighted sound power indoor side (non ducted units)
e) A-weighted sound power outdoor side (non ducted units)
f) A-weighted sound power radiated from the duct (ducted units)
g) Water pressure drop (chilled water units)

Energy labelling of air conditioners up to 12 kW

Commission Directive 2002/31/EC (in application of Directive 92/75/EEC) with regard to energy labelling of household air conditioners makes it obligatory for all concerned units to have labelling when they are presented for sale in shops or department stores. Although not mandatory it was decided to include labelling in the present Directory of Certified Products which will give much more dissemination to this action.

All air conditioners with a cooling capacity under 12 kW (AC1) are concerned.
Directive defines for each type of product the energy class going from A (more efficient) to G (less efficient). The energy efficiency class is determined in accordance with the following tables:
